Explore the Hidden Gem of Anagni: A Unique Tour Near Rome!”
Today let’s talk about my town, where I currently live, Anagni. If you’re in Rome for travel, you can Spend a day in a medieval city off the beaten path, just an hour and a half away from Rome.
Anagni, located in the Lazio region of Italy called Ciociaria, is a charming and historic town that offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the area. Situated just an hour away from Rome by train, this town is a perfect destination for those seeking a less crowded and more authentic Italian experience.
A bit of history!
Anagni, has a rich history dating back to ancient times. It was an important city during the Roman Empire and later became a significant center during the Middle Ages. Legend counts Anagnia (Anagni’s ancient name) among the “Saturnian cities”, the five cities of Lazio founded by the god Saturn. The other ones are Alatri, Arpino, Atina and Ferentino. In the 13th century, was governed by the Caetani family who brought great prestige to the city.
In this period, became a papal residence due to its importance. Various popes like Alessandro IV, Bonifacio VIII, Innocenzo III and Gregorio IX lived here for a while. For this reason, this town is also known as “city of the popes”.
Another significant episode took place here on 7 september 1303, known as “schiaffo di Anagni (slap of Anagni)”. Due to quarrel between pope Bonifacio VIII and the French king, Filippo IV, a group of soldiers under command of Gugliemo di Nogaret and Sciarra Colonna entered the city and kidnapped the pope, keeping him prisoner at the papal residence. Colonna family was the main enemy of the Caetani which Bonifacio VIII belonged.
After a few days of captivity, Anagni’s inhabitants rescued the pope who returned to Rome. After that, the papal residence was transferred to Avignon in France.
This event marked a turning point in the power struggle between the papacy and secular rulers.
Today, Anagni preserves its medieval charm with well-preserved architecture.
What see
Start your exploration of Anagni by visiting the magnificent Anagni Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria. This stunning Romanesque-Gothic cathedral dates back to the 11th century and is famous for its beautiful frescoes and intricate mosaics.
One of the peculiarities of the cathedral is the floor, built between 1224 and 1227, covered with mosaics in Cosmatesque style. This style can also be found in many churches in Rome. You cannot miss the crypt of the cathedral, a medieval treasure exceptionally preserved.
Another notable site is the Papal Palace, very close to the cathedral. The palace showcases stunning architecture and houses a museum that displays precious artifacts and artworks.
Barnekow Palace is a historical residence of the 13th century built under the pope Gregorio IX. It’s located on the main road that runs through the city center. The name comes from the Swedish baron-alchemist Alberto Barnekow who bought it in 1860.
In addition to the main attractions, you can take a walk through the streets and discover some special corners in which to take some photos.
