Affordable Places to Stay Near Rome: Best Alternatives
Is it really worth to get accommodation in Rome? Are there valid alternatives? In this post I’ll give you some valid affordable places to stay near Rome.
What do you want to do?
This is the first and crucial question you need to ask yourself, as it will determine your choice. If your purpose is to stay only in Rome, then yes, staying here is your best choice. However, if you want to visit some cities around Rome you can take a look at these alternatives.
Depending on the area you intend to visit, I will divide the map into different zones.
- Red Circle: If you don’t want to venture too far from Rome, this is the best alternative. The Roman Castles area offers beautiful landscapes and typical views of Roman countryside. You can find good accommodation in Frascati, Albano or Castel Gandolfo. In addition you can enjoy the view of Castel Gandolfo Lake and the surrounding towns. All these towns are well connected to Rome.
- Blue Circle: Tivoli is famous for Adrian’s Villa, Villa D’Este, Villa Gregoriana. if you want to stay more than one day and explore the surroundings you can get an accommodation in Tivoli. It’s just one hour by train from Rome
- Green Circle: Compared to the first alternatives, this is quite far from Rome, about 1,40h from Termini station. However, it’s a beautiful place to spend 2 or 3 days. You can enjoy the view of Bracciano Lake, taste local specialties and Roman food.
- Orange Circle: The last alternative is the furthest from Rome but it’s a great base to visit both Rome and Ciociaria region. This area is full of hidden gems, untouched by mass tourism. Despite these places are apparently distant from Rome, they are well connected. You can reach them by bus or by train (some localities) in less than two hours. It’s quite easy to find an accommodation here, since not so many people known these places.
Recommended cities
Frascati: one of the most iconic cities of Castelli Romani, it can be used as a base both for visiting Rome and for exploring other towns in the Roman Castles. During the summer, there are many events and a vibrant nightlife. There are plenty of places where you can enjoy good food and spend pleasant evenings in the town.
Castel Gandolfo: This town overlooks the namesake Lake Albano and Castel Gandolfo. Besides visiting the town, there is a path that goes all around the lake. You can enjoy beautiful view of the lake and surrounding cities.
Nemi: It’s a small town famous for its strawberries. Every year in early June, there’s Strawberry festival. Try the delicious strawberry desserts and Fragolino, a typical local liquor
Fiuggi: Located in Ciociaria region it’s a nice little town, it is also a famous thermal center. It’s full of accommodation and its a good base to visit other cities like Anagni, Alatri, Subiaco and so on. Moreover, you can find traditional products of Ciociaria Region like sweets, as well as wines and liquors.

Subiaco: Located in the Aniene Valley, Subiaco is a medieval village rich in history, art, and culture. Surrounded by the flora and fauna of the Monti Simbruini Regional Natural Park, it is the cradle of monasticism and printing.
Bracciano: Besides the lake, go to visit the town and the Castle which has a great view of the lake.
